After the discovery of a 4-year-old girl next to the body of her mother, who had died several days earlier in Montagnac in the Hérault region, the inhabitants of the small town are in shock, while the child has been taken into care.
On Wednesday, June 4, 2026, firefighters discovered a particularly distressing scene in an apartment in Montagnac, Hérault. A few hours earlier, the headmistress of the Jules-Ferry nursery school had alerted the municipal police that one of her four-year-old pupils had been missing for several days . She also reported being unable to reach her mother. The police carried out the usual checks, and when the mother’s sister confirmed she hadn’t spoken to her in some time, they rushed to her apartment. Upon arrival, they found the door locked and, as is standard procedure in such cases, called the fire department . After forcing open a window of the first-floor apartment, they found the mother deceased , her body in a state of decomposition. “It was a horrific scene that deeply saddened me. We often see deaths, but this… As soon as the door was opened, we understood: there was a terrible stench,” Jérémy told Le Parisien on Monday, June 8, 2026. The mother, who had moved into the building a year and a half ago, suffered from epilepsy . An autopsy will be performed to determine the exact cause and date of her death. As for the little girl , she didn’t say a word at first before screaming at the sight of everyone around her. She was malnourished and dehydrated and was hospitalized as soon as she was found . For the time being, she is being cared for by her aunt, her mother’s sister, as indicated by the victim’s two brothers. She could soon return to school.
