Before my sister’s wedding, I discovered that my credit card was being charged in full. When I confronted her, she smiled and said, “You’re pathetic – you don’t even have a real family. Instead of going home, I sat down in a quiet coffee shop and made a phone call.

“Hi,” I said to the bank’s fraud department, my voice calm. “I need to report an unauthorized charge.”

Within minutes, the process began.

The charge had not yet been fully paid. That meant only one thing:

It could be reversed.

The representative confirmed: the funds would be withdrawn from the hotel.

Immediately.

I closed the card. I got a new one.

Then I booked a flight.

First class.

Mexico.

If they thought I was financing their fantasy, they clearly didn’t know me at all.

Chapter 4: The Crash
Saturday morning.

I sat in the airport lounge, sipping a cocktail, watching the planes take off.

At 9:12 AM, my phone rang.

Call after call.

Messages pouring in:

MOM: Call me NOW

LILY: Where are you?!

MOM: The hotel says your card has been canceled!

I left the sun.
