Two nights later, I showed up for the rehearsal dinner.
The restaurant was elegant, glowing in a soft light and with refined taste. I felt out of place in my simple black dress.
Lily was standing by the bar, radiant in silk and diamonds.
It suits her.
“We need to talk about money,” I said.
She rolled her eyes. “Don’t start.”
“I want a repayment plan. In writing.”
She laughed.
Then she leaned forward, her voice high and cruel:
“What do you need a house for? You’re alone. No husband, no kids, no life. You’re just… sad.”
She nudged me on the shoulder.
“You’re a loser, Emma. You don’t even have a real family. Pay for my wedding? That’s the least you can do.”

Something inside me was welcoming.
It didn’t upset.
It didn’t hurt.
Just… done.
Across the room, my mother was smiling nervously, hoping I would follow up on the story she had told everyone—that I had generously offered to pay.
I smiled before.
“Oh, don’t worry,” I said quietly. “Everyone will remember this wedding.”
Then I was pleasant.
