The Benefits of Absinthe
Absinthe is available in several forms: infusion, extract, dyeing or essential oil. Each of these forms provides a variety of health benefits. Here are the main advantages of this plant:
1. Combating malaria
Artemisinin, an isolated compound of sweet absinthe (Artemisia annua), is recognized as the most potent treatment for malaria. Recommended by the World Health Organization (WHO), this absinthe-based drug works by producing free radicals that destroy the walls of malaria parasites.
2. Fight against cancer cells
Studies have shown that artemisinin, in addition to fighting malaria, is also effective against iron-rich cancer cells, especially breast cancer cells. A 2012 study found that artemisinin eliminated almost all cancer cells in 16 hours, while sparing normal cells. This mechanism makes it a promising natural cancer therapy.
3. Eliminates intestinal parasites
Absinthe is widely used to get rid of intestinal parasites such as oxyides, ascaris and tapeworms. Indeed, this plant induces the paralysis and death of worms, thus facilitating their expulsion from the body. It is frequently included in deworming programs and can be consumed in the form of herbal tea to treat this type of problem.
4. Treats Crohn’s disease
A German study showed that absinthe was able to reduce or even eliminate the need for steroids in patients with Crohn’s disease. Over a period of 10 weeks, patients who received 500 mg of absinthe three times a day saw a dramatic improvement in their symptoms, with almost complete remission in 65% of them, without adding steroids.
5. Has antimicrobial and antifungal properties
Essential oils of absinthe have shown significant antimicrobial and antifungal activity in several in vitro studies. They inhibit the growth of bacteria such as E. coli and Salmonella, as well as fungi, including Candida albicans, which are responsible for frequent infections.
6. Helps to treat SIBO
SIBO (overgrowth bacterial intestinal small), a condition related to the proliferation of bacteria in the small intestine, can be treated with absinthe. One study found that herbal treatments containing absinthe, oregano, and thyme were as effective, if not more so, than oral antibiotics to eradicate SIBO.
7. Relieves pain
Absinthe has anti-inflammatory and analgesic properties that make it a natural remedy for pain. A 2017 study showed that absinthe-based ointment reduced pain and improved physical function in patients with knee osteoarthritis.
8. Protects the brain and improves mood
Animal research suggests that absinthe may have antidepressant and neuroprotective effects. It is able to increase serotonin levels in the brain and support the formation of glutathione, a powerful antioxidant.
