It started like any other school day. My son grabbed his backpack, rushed through breakfast, and waved goodbye as he headed out the door. Nothing about that morning seemed unusual. He smiled, promised he’d be home after soccer practice, and disappeared around the corner before I even finished my coffee.

Later that afternoon, I began cleaning his room. It wasn’t something I usually did without asking, but I wanted to surprise him. As I straightened his desk, a folded piece of paper slipped from between two notebooks. At first, I assumed it was another homework assignment or a drawing.

I couldn’t believe what I was reading.

To everyone else, he seemed like a happy, energetic teenager. He did well in school, laughed with friends, and rarely complained. I had convinced myself that everything was fine because that’s what I wanted to believe.
