Online, people reacted immediately to the look, the tribute, and Barack’s expression. One emotional commenter expressed, “That skirt with her mom’s portrait made me cry. But not everyone read the moment the same way. One user wondered, “Why is the body language off. [sic].” Another person focused on the kiss photo and opined, “Also, she doesn’t look like she’s into kissing him.” Still, others defended the emotional tone they saw in the images. A different commenter, however, said they had seen the full video and felt it explained the emotion. They contextualized, “I saw the sweet video of this. Michelle surprised Barack with the skirt and he got so choked up he could not speak for awhile, so she spoke until he could. 💕 [sic].” However, another viewer still pondered, “Why is Barack looking so glum😔. [sic].”
