Tobias Vincent “Tobey” Maguire (born June 27, 1975 in Santa Monica, California) played Marvel Comics superhero Peter Parker in the Spider-Man trilogy (2002, 2004, 2007) directed by Sam Raimi. He starred in Pleasantville (1998) and Seabiscuit (2003) both directed by Gary Ross, The Cider House Rules (1999) directed by Lasse Hallstrom from the 1985 novel by John Irving. He acted with Michael Douglas in Wonder Boys (2000) directed by Curtis Hanson from the 1995 novel by Michael Chabon, with George Clooney in The Good German (2006) by Steven Soderberg, with Jake Gyllenhaal in Brothers (2009) by Jim Sheridan, with Leonardo DiCaprio in The Great Gatsby (2013) directed by Baz Lurhman from the 1925 novel by F. Scott Fitzgerald. He played chess champion Bobby Fisher in Pawn Sacrifice (2015) by Edward Zwick.
Tobey Maguire, whose full name is Tobias Vincent Maguire, was born in 1975. Audiences are very familiar with the beloved Spider-Man, but few would guess some secrets about this actor.
A Childhood of both Material and Emotional Abuse
At the time of his birth, his parents were quite young. When Wendy Brown was 18, his mother was working in advertising and trying to become an actress, while his father, Vincent Maguire, was 20 and worked as a chef and construction worker. However, they divorced when the actor was 2 years old.
His parents’ divorce at such a young age also contributed to a more difficult life for him. Tobey recalled, “I always wished I had a decent place to live, but the reality was I had to sleep on relatives’ sofas, and some nights we had to wander outside looking for a place to sleep. My family had nothing but food stamps and government health insurance. I wanted to escape this situation, and my biggest ambition at the time was to make a lot of money.”
Then, Tobey thought that following his father to become a chef was the quickest way to make money. However, his mother convinced him to take acting classes, and she gave him $100 to do so.
Starting his career at age 12
At age 12, Tobey began appearing in commercials and television series. For him, success isn’t about waiting for doors to open. The actor shared, “It’s not just about the opportunities you get, but also about attitude. It’s about the ability to imagine a different future for yourself.”
From there, the actor’s career became increasingly solid as he participated in films such as This Boy’s Life in 1993, alongside Robert De Niro and Leonardo DiCaprio. In 1997, he appeared in The Ice Storm.
In 2000, he starred in Wonder Boys, alongside Robert Downey Jr. and Michael Douglas. But the biggest turning point in his acting career was in 2002, when he played Peter Packer – Spider-Man, a film that earned him $4 million. In 2003, he voiced Seabiscuit and received $12 million.
“When I first became successful, I always had to be careful with the money I made, and that definitely stems from my past experiences. You know, people who win the lottery with a lot of money, they spend it all right away, but that would never happen to me. I don’t want to be in a position where my expenses are so high that I have to earn money from one movie to the next,” Tobey said.
Tobey became the highest-paid actor for his role as the wed-slinging superhero, earning $17 million plus 5% of the box office revenue for Spider-Man 2. He also earned $15 million plus 7.5% of the box office revenue for Spider-Man 3.
