If something genuinely major has just happened, other credible sources may begin reporting it as well. However, remember that the first few minutes of a developing story can contain incomplete information, so multiple reports may not immediately agree.
Look for statements from official sources when appropriate.
If the claim concerns an emergency, police incident, natural disaster, transportation disruption, or government announcement, relevant authorities may eventually provide information.
Most importantly, pay attention to language.
There is a significant difference between:
> “Authorities confirmed that…”
and:
> “People online are saying…”
One describes verified information. The other describes a rumor.
## The Problem With Clickbait
Some websites deliberately use vague headlines because mystery generates clicks.
A title such as **“BREAKING NEWS: Just 5 Minutes Ago… You Won’t Believe What Happened!”** leaves out the central fact.
