My best friend married my younger sister, who has Down syndrome; but while she was fighting for her life, he took my hands tightly and whispered to me: “It is time you knew WHY I MARRIED HER.” 💔 Rosie, my sister, is only a year younger than me. Because of her Down syndrome, some kids distanced themselves from her or treated her like she was strange. 😔 My best friend, Ben, was never one of them. “You will always have Ben and me, Rosie,” I used to tell her often. Ben always took care of her. At recess, he would always pick her for his team, and when we were in fourth grade, he even promised that one day he would take her to the prom. 🕺💃 For years, everyone expected Ben and me to end up together. Instead, when we were older, he proposed to Rosie. 💍 I cried more than Rosie did. My best friend became part of my family as my brother, and my sister received the happiness that strangers said someone like her could never have. ❤️ Then Rosie found out she was expecting twins. We were all filled with joy. 👶👶 But her pregnancy soon became complicated. When she reached thirty-four weeks, Rosie was rushed to the hospital. The doctors warned us that the situation was extremely serious. They were doing everything possible to save Rosie and both babies. 🏥 Ben stayed right by my side, his face completely pale. Suddenly, he took my hand and led me toward a deserted hallway. “What is wrong?” I asked. “Before the surgery, Rosie made me promise to tell you something if she did not wake up.” Ben looked on the verge of tears. 💧 “It is time for you to understand WHY I TRULY married her,” he said as he squeezed my hands. My stomach churned. “Ben, why are you talking like this?” All the most horrible possibilities rushed through my mind. Could it be for money? Was he interested in the inheritance our parents would leave behind? Or had he married my sister just to have a reason to stay close to me? Ben stared at me for a moment and then said: “It is MUCH WORSE than you think. You need to sit down.” 🪑 From inside his jacket, he pulled out a piece of paper. I did not even finish reading the first line when a scream tore through me. ✉️ I know you want to know the rest of the story, because what happened next is completely unexpected.
