Major Retail Chain Closes All 540 Mall Locations

Rue21, the teen fashion retailer known for affordable trendy clothing, is closing all 543 of its U.S. stores, marking the end of a long-running retail brand that served young shoppers for decades.

The shutdown is expected to take place over four to six weeks and will include major clearance sales across all locations. Discounts are set to begin around 20% and could eventually reach up to 90%, drawing customers hoping to buy heavily reduced items during the final sales period.

The company’s closure follows failed efforts to keep the business financially viable. Court-related proceedings indicated that the bids received were not enough to support continued operations, ultimately forcing the decision to shut down all stores rather than continue under restructuring or partial sale.

The impact will be significant for employees, with around 5,000 workers affected by the closures. The company had a strong presence in several states, including Texas, Georgia, Florida, and North Carolina, where it was especially popular with younger shoppers. Its decline reflects broader challenges facing traditional retail, including competition from fast-fashion e-commerce platforms and shifting consumer habits.
